A Civil Rights Issue?

As quoted from a Fox News Interview, and said by a black man:

"I've known people who used to be gay. I've never known anyone who used to be black."

Discuss.

Revised: I'm not asking if it's right or wrong to have gay marriage. I obviously realize this is a touchy subject. However, what I would like to know is, if, in your opinion, gay marriage is a CIVIL right as opposed to just any other type of freedom.

Interesting question and interesting quote. Do you know who said it?

What is the difference between civil rights and other rights?? Maybe I'm confused but I thought civil rights were the rights of citizens to certain social freedoms and equality. I am not too well-versed in legal issues so I don't really know the legal difference between a regular freedom and a civil right. Help!

I'm not exactly sure who said it.

As far as the difference, civil rights tend to be rights for women and minorities, etc., though not ALWAYS. There are political rights, which protect us from the government, etc., and then there are civil rights, which for instance - let blacks and women vote.

I'm not 100% sure on the difference, but I know that on the interview, they were discussing whether or not gay marriage is a civil right, and the black man said that quote in reply.

As far as I know, civil rights tend to be more about your literal rights based on sex, race, but not on RELIGION or BELIEF or, in this case, FEELINGS.

I think that is where the difference lies.

I'm going to be really bold and say that I think gay marriage is a civil rights issue and whether we call it marriage or a civil union, I think they should be recognized by the federal government. Purely as a civil rights issue.

The way I see it, the most vociferous opponents of equal marriage rights are often possessed of latent homosexual desire. The courts in this country have, consistently, upheld the rights of the religious to practice as they see fit, often erring on the side of the religious. Do not worry though, I for one will not judge you for wanting to partake in physical congress with members sharing your physical sexual makeup. To err is human, after all. As Elton John once said, "People should be very free with sex, but they should draw the line at goats."
